How Massage Influences the Heart and Body
Massage creates valuable changes in the body and is helpful to know these changes and how they affect the body. Massage impacts the cardiovascular system that controls digestion, respiration, heart rate and the endocrine system, that includes glandular and hormones.
Massage Therapy can change the blood pressure. The basic methods of treatment like effleurage, long non-pressured strokes, kneading and tapotement, (chopping vibration), stimulates receptors that send the relaxation message to the central nervous system. The reflex from these techniques cause vasodilatation, the widening of the blood vessels and the result is decreasing blood pressure and heart rate.
Different techniques like neuromuscular therapy is used to breakdown scar tissue and free the area of tight unmovable muscle fibers or adhesions. The one side effect can be an increase in blood pressure. When Ischemic Compression (squeezing pressure), is used, the cardiovascular system is then allowed to move stagnant blood out of a tight area and flood the area with new re-oxygenated blood that helps in healing damaged tissues. Increased blood circulation can increase intravascular pressure, which is a very good thing because it provides muscles with the oxygen they need to move and be healthy.
Due to the changes with blood pressure control, in a massage session, people with uncontrolled high or low blood pressure should avoid massage unless they have permission from their doctor. However, case studies have shown the light forms of massage (Swedish) can help to reduce blood pressure.
In addition to the effects of blood pressure, massage helps to decrease the effects of stress on the body. The autonomic system has two states of being- fight or flight. The sympathetic nervous system accelerates heart rate, constricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure. The parasympathetic nervous system slows heart rate, increases intestinal peristalsis and gland activity. This happens when we are faced with a stressful situation.
The very stress of life cause us to stay in the fight or flight state. This is a negative effect on the body that causes increased blood pressure and increased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
Massage helps the autonomic system to shut down and go into rest and digest mode. Massage also decreases depression, hostility and anxiety. A plus in the reduction of the negative effects of stress on the body, the heart and other vital organs. Invest in your health.
